「What is "intelligence" in the 21st century?」

"Looking back at my experience at a philosophy café" by T(2年生)

Do you know what a philosophy café is?

It is an informal gathering where individuals come together to discuss philosophical topics and questions.

As I participated in one of these events on December 17th,

I would like to share what we did and what I learned from the discussion.

To begin with, I am going to explain things we talked about.

Fundamentally, each participant in a group had to think of at least one theme, such as whether religion is detrimental to society or not, and members decide which topic they discuss.

Our group, in which all members talked in English, as opposed to Japanese, picked the following: "What is "intelligence" in the 21st century?"

This is a question that does not have single answer but rather multiple ones.

However, that is the whole point of conducting a philosophy café,

because if there were to be only one way of answering to the question, the discussion would not deepen,

the situation of which participants of a philosophy café must avoid by all means.

Therefore, we first started off by telling our individual opinions to each other while not criticizing others'.

And of course you can inquire about other's opinion should the arguments a certain individual made is hard to comprehend

(just like in British parliamentary debate, one can put the hand on the head and say "POI!", if they do not mind embarrassment, of course.)

For instance, one person said that how much one can do better than Artificial Intelligence is what defines "intelligence", while the other argued that test scores

--therefore academic skills-- determine how much intelligence one possesses.

To this, I asked him if he considered those in countries where people do not have easy access to education and are consequently poorly educated as "less intelligent",

and his answer was no. But this is just a tip of the iceberg, as the discussion went on for more than 2 hours.

Furthermore, there were numerous things I have learned from this philosophy café.

One is that one must listen to what people on the other side of the aisle have to say,the notion that we all ought to remember in this politically divided and turbulent world.

Another is that a philosophy café is truly an enjoyable and intriguing event, because we get to know about those we first meet by discussing perplexing philosophical questions, the idea which I believe all of us can agree on.
