Grant Heightsの呼称
Grant Heights（グラントハイツ）の呼称は，どのような語源なのでしょうか。
グラントハイツの「グラント」は，親日家の米国第18代大統領のユリシーズ・シンプソン・グラント(Ulysses Simpson Grant)(1822-1885)に由来しています。グラント大統領は，元々，オハイオ州生まれで，士官学校で軍人の教育を受けていました。そして，メキシコ戦争や南北戦争で活躍し，戦争終結に導きました。後に共和党から大統領選に立候補し，1869年～1877年の間二期8年大統領を務めています。ちなみに，大統領後の明治12年(1879年)5月に来日しています。上野公園には，グラント夫妻来日記念樹と銅版のレリーフがあり「平和を我々に(Let us have peace!)」と記されています。
現在も上野公園にあるGrant将軍の木は，上野動物園正門の左脇にあります。このとき，グラント将軍はロウソン檜，夫人は泰山木を植樹されました。既に130年以上も過ぎ，枯れかけている状況に，ホームレスの方も周辺に居るため，双子パンダの誕生で祝福ムードの上野動物園とは異なりひっそりとしています。昭和4(1929)年に来日50年を記念して記念碑が英語と日本語で設置し，平成4(1992)年に案内版を設置しました。来日50年の英文は，下記のように記述されています。写真は上野公園のGrant将軍記念碑です。

MEMORIAL TREES PLANTED BY GENERAL AND MRS. ULYSSES S. GRANT General Ulysses Simpson Grant ex-President of the United States of America arrived at Nagasaki in 1879, whereupon Meiji Tenno dispatched an Imperial envoy and a warship to greet him. On his arrival in Tokyo on July 3rd, the General was hailed with great emphasise by MS lending citizens. Meiji Tenno welcomed his as the guest of the nation and peaced the Hama Detached Palace at his disposal. Imperial audiences, sight-seeing, and various kinds of entertainment were arranged for him. On August 25th, the final entertainment was held in honor of General and Mrs. Grant at Ueno Park, in which Meiji Tenno was graciously present.In commemoration of this event General Grant planted a hinoki (Cupressus Lawsonana) and Mrs. Grant a Gyokuran (Magnokia grandiflora), both of which have Grown thick and tall. But few people how know the history of the trees. Therefore, we who had the privilege of participating in the welcome event fifty years ago, have elected this memorial tablet near them. 時に，2021年はNHK大河ドラマ「青天を衝け」と新一万円札肖像画でもある澁澤榮一氏のブームです。この昭和4(1929)年の記念碑設置の際のビデオ動画が残されているのを，筆者は2021年4月に埼玉県深谷市血洗島にある渋沢栄一記念館で目の当たりにして大変驚きました。大河ドラマでもグラント氏に係る一話が放映されましたが，飛鳥山のみならず，上野やこの練馬にあった米軍基地に繋がっているところも紹介してもらえたら良かったのになと少し残念に思っています。
なお，「グラントハイツ」の正式名称は，“The United States Army Force Housing Area Grant Heights”である。昭和22年3月3日に命名されました。昭和33年7月からは，“The United States 34th Air Force Housing Area Grant Heights”と呼ばれました。
ただ，多くの日本人は，グラントハイツがあまりにも余裕のある広い施設であったため，「グラント(Grant)」を壮大なという意味の「グランド(Grand)」や広場という意味の「グラウンド(Ground)」と誤解して呼ばれることが多くありました。（第十二代校長 加藤竜吾）
