On October 20th, 2022, 1st year Roka High School students went on an 1 hour and 30 minute trip to the TGG, formally known as the Tokyo Global Gateway, that is located in Odaiba, a seaside city with beautifully constructed buildings and views.
When all of the students had arrived in front of the large and tall building, they were divided into small groups and were teamed up with one of the foreign ESL teachers at the TGG. I was surprised to see so many teachers within the building and working with so many different groups of students at different ages!

On the 1st and 2nd floor, the ESL teachers warmed the students up with some team building activities for about 10 minutes before going to one of the specially themed rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Roka students got to experience using English in an almost realistic setting through roleplay which was so interesting to watch from the sidelines!

On the 2nd floor, Roka students participated in role play activities in different venues such as a clinic, pharmacy, diner, hotel, market, bistro, and airport, to name a few of the themed rooms. My favorite one has to be TGG Airlines. The students had a chance to feel and see what it’d be like to be on an English speaking flight, complete with a passport and a menu/flashcard to use as a visual to order some food or ask for help.

On the 3rd floor, there were four areas: the Laboratory Area, the Intercultural Area, the Campus Area, and the Future area. The most interesting rooms on this floor had to be the Media Labs and the Studios where students got to pretend making a news forecast and also watching them “live” on TVs in the other room.

Last but not least, I have to commend the ESL teachers and staff that were able to host a program with the school and create an enjoyable learning atmosphere where they could put their English skills to the test! I would highly recommend any school to try out the program with their students and gauge their interaction and participation!

I appreciate being able to attend this trip to TGG and hope to be able to go again with  Roka High School’s students in the future!
