At the heart of Japanese High School life is the annual cultural festival. For students, it is an unforgettable part of their school experience, creating memories that remain for years after. With shared memories and collective participation, the event holds cultural and social significance. Although the cultural festival is packed with entertainment, it also serves as a dynamic expression of culture, creativity, teamwork and dedication.

Amid Tokyo's cloudy skies and steady rainfall of early September, Tanashi High School radiated an array of colour and energetic spirit. Parents, friends and locals were greeted at the school entrance with a vibrant rainbow ribbon display and a magnificent recreation of Van Gogh's Café Terrace at Night. Walking up the grand staircase, visitors began a day of celebration, witnessing students 'paint their stories' through exhibitions and performances.

After weeks of hard work and practice, all had come together in a fantastic showcase in which all corners of the school were covered in art and decoration. On the main floor, colourful banners introduced visitors to a variety of themed cafes serving delicious Japanese and international dishes. From burgers, yakisoba, and tacos to madeleines and dim sum, students prepared an impressive selection of food and drinks. The cafes serving the food were all uniquely decorated, seating guests in imaginative settings ranging from pirate and maid cafes to Hawaiian and Chinese restaurants. The food and drinks proved so popular that long queues stretched across the hallways, with many classes selling out their most popular items.

Beyond the cafes, every area of the school offered something new to discover. Classrooms were transformed according to a specific theme, each offering a unique and exciting showcase of the student's creativity and hard work. Family, friends and locals were able to experience thrilling horror mazes, intriguing mystery quizzes, exhilarating rides, active truck games and retro photo booths. There was also opportunity to try traditional Japanese tea ceremony, where delicious hot matcha and sweets were served to visitors from students dressed in lavish traditional Yukata dress. With a diverse range of attractions, there was something for everyone to enjoy. One of the standout exhibits was the first-year students' specular Frozen drama performance. Featuring a magnificent blue ice castle set design, and clever, witty acting performances from the students, it captivated large audiences throughout the day.

From the etching of a pencils to the clicking of keys, the IT room offered a different kind of talent and creativity. The sound of laughter and buzzing game sounds filled the room as visitors challenged themselves with interactive online games programmed by the students. Among the most popular was Spelling Quest, a competitive game that kept participants, including myself, returning continuously throughout the day as they attempted to beat their previous scores and climb the leaderboard.

To close the incredible day, the gymnasium stage came alive with music, dance and energy. Acoustic performances provided heartfelt moments, while student bands rocked the stage with confidence, guitar solos and powerful vocals that filled the room with excitement. Synchronised dance performances from idol groups drew enthusiastic cheers from the audience, with many clapping, smiling and jumping along to the music. The performances, many being showcases from final year students, perfectly captured the spirit of the cultural festival, which brings the students, their families and members of the local community together in celebration of Tanashi, and the achievements of the students during their time at this school.

More than just a day of entertainment, the cultural festival displayed the impeccable teamwork, creativity and passion of the Tanashi High School Students and staff. At the heart of Japanese High School life is the annual cultural festival. However, at the heart of Tanashi High School, is the students and staff that work to make the school a wonderful place. Through every exhibition, performance, and attraction, students successfully were able to 'paint their stories' and bring a day of spirit and vibrancy to the quiet neighbourhoods of Nishitokyo. Long after the festival has ended, and students will eventually have graduated, fun memories and warm nostalgia of the cultural festival weekend during September will remain.
