Chinese Acrobatic Performance!
We held an Art Appreciation Program for 1st-year students in our school gymnasium. This time, the students watched a Chinese acrobatic performance and had a valuable opportunity to experience powerful feats and vibrant stage performances that they rarely have the chance to see in their everyday school life.
Our school's JET also attended the performance that day and wrote an article about the experience in English. Below, we would like to share the original English article along with its Japanese translation.
Kamiwaza Performance

Today the 1st years were treated to an exceptional performance by the Chinese Acrobatic group Kamiwaza. As a Hong Kong resident, I was expecting to see some traditional performances like the Lion Dance and the face changing Bian Lian act. While Bian Lian was present, what really surprised me was the mix of traditional Chinese Opera and daring feats of balance.

One of the acts was a segment of Journey to the West where Sun Wukong fights a dual wielding warrior. The movements of both the performers were fluid and well practiced displaying the grace of a traditional Chinese dance. What caught me off guard though, was how they handled their props. Prop swords and staff twirled around their body as though they were a natural 5th limb. Even when it left the hands of their users, they would get deflected back by the opponent so accurately that they always returned for the next move. Their hand dexterity was very inspiring to watch.

Another performance that made my jaw drop was the table spinning act. To summarize, a performer would lie down on their back, lift their legs, and quickly spin various large objects on their feet. The most ridiculous object they brought out was a table. Its unevenness made me nervous as she needed more time to get the balance right. Yet, I had no reason to worry as they managed to spin it in all four directions!

Although every performance had its own charm and was entertaining to watch, I’d have to give the best performance to the finale; the chair tower. This man would stack chairs, balanced on bottles, to make a very tall tower all the while climbing it. The tower was a bit more than halfway to the ceiling of the gym, a height that would mean serious injury if he fell. Everyone was at the edge of their seats as he made his way higher with the tower visibly shaking with every movement. At the top, he would do handstands to display his insane balance and courage all the while the students praised in awe.

Today was very unexpected but very welcome. As many of the audience could relate, my grin rarely dropped during the show. A quality performance to mark the beginning of the first summer of high school for 1st year students!
