The Race is on: Hyakunin Isshu – One Hundred Poets Race
Recently, our first-grade students enjoyed a race, hyakunin isshu, in other words a ‘one-hundred poets’ game where they had to complete a series of old Japanese verses. Students were in groups of about 4-6, with two classes participating against each other in the group.

最近、1年生たちは「百人一首」、つまり古い日本の和歌の一部を完成させる「百人の歌人のゲーム」を楽しみました。 生徒たちは4～6人ほどのグループに分かれ、2つのクラスがそれぞれのグループで対戦しました。
To start the game, in their groups, students laid out 100 cards on the floor, then as a teacher read out a verse, the students had to race against each other to find the final sequence to complete the verse. This brought about true excitement and passion as students were determined to be the first to slam their hand down on the right answer. Cheers erupted around the gym when students landed their palms on the correct answer, followed by sighs of frustration for those who were so close to getting the answers, but felt short by speed of their rivals. By the end of the session, students had piles of card stacked next to them, a symbol of their admirable knowledge of traditional Japanese. The groups then totalled up their score to reveal the overall winner.

ゲームを始めるにあたって、生徒たちはグループごとに100枚の札を床に並べ、先生が和歌を詠み上げると、生徒たちはその和歌を完成させる最後の句を探すために競争しました。正しい札に誰よりも早く手を叩きつけようとする生徒たちにより、本物の興奮と情熱が生まれました。正解の札に手のひらが当たった瞬間、体育館のあちこちで歓声が沸き起こり、答えに手が届きそうだったのにライバルの速さに及ばなかった生徒たちからは悔しいため息がもれました。セッションが終わるころには、生徒たちの横には札の山が積み重ねられ、伝統的な日本語への見事な知識の象徴となっていました。最後に各グループは、総合優勝チームを明らかにするため得点を合計しました。
All in all, this game brought out the competitive spirit of our Tanashi High School first-graders, as well as providing a fun and engaging way to recite their learnings from their Japanese lessons.

総じて、このゲームは田無高校1年生の競争心を引き出すと同時に、国語の授業で学んだことを楽しく、そして主体的に復習する良い機会となりました。
