ニコル先生に聞いてみました！

近年、日本でもハロウィーンのイベントなどが見られるようになりましたが、
あなたはハロウィーンについて知っていますか？
今回、本校ALT（外国語指導助手）のニコル先生にハロウィーンについて聞いてみました！

Q1: What day is Halloween?
A1: It is October 31^st

Q2: Where does the name Halloween come from?
A2: It comes from the name All Hallows’ Eve. October 31^st is the day before (the eve) of November 1^st, which is All Hallows’ Day. `Hallow’ means `spirit’, so All Hallows’ Day is more known as All Saints’ Day.

Q3: What is All Hallows’ Day?
A3: All Hallows’ Day is a day to honour the souls of saints and martyrs. The next day, All Souls’ Day, is a day to honour any soul(s) that were not named as a saint or a martyr.

Q4: Why do people wear costumes on Halloween?
A4: It was believed that ghosts would come back to earth on Halloween, so people wore costumes to disguise themselves from the ghosts.

Q5: Why do people make jack o’lanterns?
A5: Jack o’lanterns are made to keep evil spirits away from the homes they are placed in front of.

Q6: How did trick-or-treating start?
A6: Poor people used to beg for food, and passing families would give them soul cakes in return for their prayers for the families’ dead relatives. Soon, poor people started to go door-to-door and prayed for each of the families to receive more food. Later, this was done only by children. That is why only children trick-or-treat today.

Q7: When did Halloween start?
A7: First traces of Halloween can be found over 2000 years ago. They come from the Celtic holiday Samhain (サーウィン). Celts believed that ghosts came back to earth on this day. They would dress in costumes on this day and told fortunes for the new year which started on November 1^st.
