Tokyo Metropolitan Minamitama Secondary Education School

Tokyo Metropolitan Daiyon Girls High School was established in 1908. In 1950, it was renamed Tokyo Metropolitan Minamitama Senior High School and became coeducational. In 2010, with a tradition of over 100 years, it became a secondary school named Tokyo Metropolitan Minamitama Secondary Education School, which carries out middle and high school level education. The school aims to foster the human power that arises from the harmony of mind, knowledge, and body, and to nurture leaders who will be active in various fields in the international society.
Faculty members collaborate to support the realization of students' dreams by sharing a common goal: to help students with basic abilities become students with breakthrough power. In order to improve academic achievement, Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education has designated our school as an Intellectual Inquiry Innovator Promotion School, a Science and Math Leading School, an English Education Promotion School and a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Promotion School.
In addition, this year, we were selected as a base school for the WWL (World Wide Learning) Consortium Project from many schools nationwide by the National Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). In order to foster innovative and global human resources in the future, MEXT has designated 10 locations nationwide to create a mechanism to provide advanced learning to high school students by collaborating with high schools, domestic and overseas universities, research institutions, companies, and international organizations. Minamitama Secondary Education School, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, has had the opportunity to make a breakthrough as a base school for the WWL Consortium Project, with the start of a new era, Reiwa.
We would like to further evolve Minamitama Secondary Education School to become a model for Tokyo Metropolitan schools by utilizing all educational resources in anticipation of the next ten years.
Our Education
The foundation for our education is field work activities which foster curiosity. From first to third grade, students conduct experiments and investigations focusing on the local region. Then, after visiting university laboratories and developing their own hypotheses, they conduct scientific verification activities. In 4th grade, each student participates in a seminar and examines the challenges facing the future and determines his or her own inquiry theme. Each student finishes an essay by the end of 5th grade and continues learning to think logically and creatively.
Diverse Link Tokyo Edu core school (World Wide Learning Consortium Project by Mext)
In order to foster innovative global human resources in the future, high schools and other universities, companies and organizations all over the world work together as part of the WWL Consortium to build up a system to provide more advanced learning to high school students by holding international conferences and forming advanced learning networks in high schools. The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education has set up a network called Diverse Link Tokyo Edu (DLTE) so that we can pave the way to the WWL Consortium.
As a base school of this consortium, we are implementing these initiatives:
- Curriculum development to deepen the fusion of humanities, sciences, and inquiry learning
- Participation in an international conference for high school students
- Creation of our own inquiry learning text
- Practice of CLIL ( Content and Language Integrated Learning )
Intellectual Inquiry Innovator Promotion School (2017-2020)
Amidst a rapidly changing society in which globalization makes the world familiar and information technology and artificial intelligence are developing at remarkable speeds, what are the skills and qualities that are needed in the future? They are the ability to resolve challenging problems with no fixed answers through cooperation with diverse groups of people, the ability to discover problems themselves, find answers, then create new value, the ability to see the essence of things, and the ability to form a better society. These are the qualities necessary for students to be successful in the future, and that requires inquiry based activities. We will nurture future leaders who can be active in various fields and organizations of the international community.
Science and Math Leading School (2018-2020)
Fostering science and mathematics leaders who can be active in society and cultivating students’ abilities to think logically, judge, or to express themselves are the two pillars of this school. We will help students connect their scientific and mathematical knowledge acquired through inquiry based activities to future successes. These activities are related to learning each of the subjects and contribute to students' career path.
English Education Promotion School (2016-2020)
To improve the English ability of our students, we will improve the students’ four skills of "writing", "reading", "listening" and "speaking". In addition to the efforts we are making as an English Education Promotion School, we are also implementing our own unique initiatives.
Efforts as an English Education Promotion School:
- External verification test (e.g. GTEC, English proficiency test)
- Utilization of voice and reading software
- Online English conversation with overseas instructors using a tablet
- Tokyo English Empowerment Project (Efforts to expand opportunities for students to use English on a daily basis in school life to enhance students' ability to communicate in English)
School's own efforts:
- The only school in Japan participating in Global Scholars (a tech-savvy, direct, peer-to-peer learning program for students 10 to 13 years old to develop cultural understanding, knowledge of the world, and global competency skills through direct communication in a digital classroom)
- Recitation contest, Speech contest
- Overseas language training tour (Australia)
- Extensive reading assignments of newspapers in English
- English composition assignments
- Reading & Discussion (a workshop where students read and discuss social problems in English with a native English speaking lecturer)
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Promotion School (2018-2019)
BYOD involves conducting in-class activities to help students learn effectively how to use personal electronic devices such as smartphones. Thanks to BYOD, adaptive learning is also available, in which AI chooses an appropriate question to the individual's level of understanding from approximately 68,000 questions.
