Den-en-Chofu High School Chorus Contest 2018
Every February, first and second-year classes compete in a choral contest for awards in categories such as best performance, best school song, conductor, and pianist. This year, the songs ranged from popular J-pop to emotional ballads. There was even a song from my favorite Studio Ghibli movie, Spirited Away! The students spent many hours practicing after school and they sang beautifully on the day of the event. I could feel each homeroom’s spirit and unity from their performances. I was also impressed by the student conductors and pianists from each class. Every person had their own conducting style and the musical accompaniment helped lead the singers throughout the song. We have very talented students here at Denko!
Not only did I listen to the students sing but I also had the pleasure of singing “空も飛べるはず” alongside other teachers and PTA members. It was fun to sing with everyone and I enjoyed seeing the students’ surprised faces when they saw me on stage. While the rest of the contest is quite formal, students cheered and shouted as we walked onto the stage. It was my first time singing a song in Japanese but I felt encouragement from the students’ cheers and bright smiles. It was a wonderful event, and I look forward to creating more special memories at school festivals.
